The first of the BPE Open competititons of 2006 was the Clay Cross National Exhibition of Colour Transparencies. SLIC member, Maureen Glynn, had an entry and an acceptance with, Another Time, Another Place.

Similarly, the Maitland International Salon of Photography (Australia), the first of the FIAP open competitions to have an entry from SLIC members came during this month.

Maureen Glynn had 5 acceptances with Prisoner of Time and The Past Re-visited (Hon men), both colour prints, Another Time, Another Place and Faded Beauty, both mono prints and Solitude which was a slide.

Norman Piper had 2 acceptances with Water Mill , slide and Winter, mono print (Cert of Merit).

Verna Piper had 4 acceptances with Art Lover and Blue Orchid, both colour prints, Staircase Rochefoucaud, a mono print and Lone Tree which was a slide.

The February meeting saw the fourth and final Quarterly competition in the SLIC year. The judge was Graham Dean, from Darwen, who stepped in at very short notice when Gordon Jenkins, from Chorley, who was to have been the judge, was unable to be with us.

A record number of 27 prints gained 20 marks!
The judge's bonus points went to:

North Cheshire PS opened their Annual Exhibition on Wednesday 8th February and also held their annual Digital Print Competition on that evening. This competition has been running since 1998 and remins extremely popular. 23 clubs entered the 2006 event, each with 5 prints. The judge for the evening was Barry Colquhoun, from Lytham. North Cheshire PS won the trophy with 92 points and Dumfries CC was in second place with 91 points. SLIC gained a score of 87 out of a possible 100 and was in joint 5th place with Southport PS.

The five prints entered by SLIC were: Once Upon a Time by Maureen Glynn (19), Pears by EB Swarbrick (16), Faith by Verna Piper (18), Solitude by Maureen Glynn (15), and Alhambra Courtyard by Norman Piper (19).

The following evening, also at North Cheshire PS, SLIC entered 5 slides in the knockout competition for the Challenge Trophy. This event was judged by Peter Gennard (Midlands). 21 Clubs took part and SLIC gained 8 points and achieved joint 8th place along with Oban PS. Leek CC took first place with 19 points and Wigan 10 came second with 14 points.

The 5 slides entered by SLIC were Rendezvous by Sheila Goodyear, Once Upon a Time by Maureen Glynn, Aspects of Imperial War Museum by Norman Piper, The Art Lover by Verna Piper and Arctic Ternby Michael Spillane.

Still in February and the results from the Southport Open Exhibition were announced. This competition has categories for prints, slides and digital projection.

Mike Lawrence was awarded second place in the colour print section with "Dark Secret".

Maureen Glynn had acceptances with 1 colour print, Street Entertainers, 3 digitally projected, Elements of the Scottish Parliament, Prisoner of Time, and Solitude (cert. of merit), and 2 slides, The Past Re-visited and The Entertainers (3rd Place).

Norman Piper had acceptances with 2 digitally projected images, Aspects of the Imperial War Museum and Three Young Men.

Verna Piper had acceptances with 1 mono print, Genesis, 1 slide, Penny Black, and 1 digitally projected, The Art Lover.

Chris Widdall had acceptances in the print section with "Whispering Grass" and "The Art of Contemplation".

February was a busy month! The Southampton International Salon (FIAP) also announced
its results this month.

Maureen Glynn had 6 acceptances with Solitude and Street Entertainers, both colour prints; Faded Beauty and Lookin' for Trouble, both mono prints; The Entertainers and The Past Re-visited, both slides.

Norman Piper had acceptances with 2 slides, All Bitter & Twisted and Dolphin Island.

Verna Piper 5 acceptances with Blue Orchid, Faith and Leda & the Egg, all colour prints; No Surrender, mono print; Penny Black, slide.

The Vale of Evesham (BPE), Photo 2006, digital on-line competition results were announced this month.

Chris Widdall had 10 acceptances with: Gallerie Lafayette (which was awarded a BPE Ribbon), also Across the Atrium, The Art of Contemplation, Aga, Before the Mast, Venice Blues, Dash, Venetia, Cappuccino and Valentine.

Verna Piper had five acceptances with: Penny Black, Blue Orchid, Art Lover, Stairs - Rochefoucaud and No Surrender.

Maureen Glynn had two accepances with Solitude (awarded a BPE ribbon) and The Past Revisited.

Felicity Appleton had 1 acceptance with Clematis.

The May Quarterly is the first of the new SLIC year and follows the AGM. Gordon Jenkins from Chorley was our judge and did a great job judging the 42 prints and 28 digitally projected images. His comments were, as always, positive, helpful and always encouraging.

Quite a number of prints and dp images scored 20 marks but the judge's bonus 2 marks in prints went to All Dressed up and Nowhere to go by Maureen Glynn and in dp images to Prisoner of Time also by Maureen Glynn.

Other prints scoring 20 were: Danseuse #2 by Maureen Glynn, Leroy, and Beach Life by EB Swarbrick, The Passage by Bill Nairn, Space City by Barry Willcock, Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head and In a Spin by Felicity Appleton Little Boxes #2 by Norman Piper, Huts on a Hill, and Leda 2 by Verna Pipe, Red Poppy and The Artist by Leslie Miles.

The results of the 5th Suncoast Virtual Imaging Salon (FIAP) were announced in May. Barry Willcock had 2 acceptances in the General category with Walking in the Rain and Leaving Llangollen plus one acceptance in the creative category with Tulip Vortex.

Also in May, the results from the Trierenberg Austrian Super Circuit (FIAP) were announced. The Super Circuit comprises 4 salons, each with its own panel of international judges, and the pictures pass through each salon in turn. There are numerous categories and themes variously accredited by FIAP, PSA(America) and VOAV(Austria).

Still in May and the results of the L&CPU Annual Print and Slide competitions were announced. Full results can be downloaded in PDF form, from the L&CPU website, by clicking here.
Although some SLIC members enter the competition through another club, SLIC was able to achieve the following results:

In General Colour Prints, for the Appleby Cup, joint 3rd, with Macclesfield CC, out of 48 clubs.

In Monochrome Prints, for the Tansley Memorial Shield, joint 4th, with Whitby Club PS, Bolton CC, Bury PS and Warrington PS. out of 35 clubs.

In Natural History Prints, for the Crowther Cox Cup, joint 21st with Warrington PS and Sale PS out of 25 clubs.

June saw the results of the Salon Internacional de Fotografia Digital Illes Balears (FIAP) announced. Barry Willcock, Norman and Verna Piper all sent entries. Norman had acceptances with The Water Mill and The Big One, and a FIAP Ribbon for Fenceline. Verna had aceptances with Blue on White, Apollo & Selene and Postage Stamps. August, and another Quarterly already! Martin Malies, from South Manchester Camera Club, was our judge and found something constructive to say about every one of the 90 images he saw in front of him.

Verna Piper had an entry in the Chung A1 Print Salon, Vancouver (FIAP) and gained acceptances with, Blue Orchid, Staircase - Rochefoucauld and No surrender.

October and November are always busy months as regards competitions and one of the first, for SLIC, was the annual 'Who are the Champions', hosted by Southport PS. It's a competition for digitally projected images and eight Clubs took part. It's a knock-out competition, over 8 rounds, with 11 images, from 11 different authors, being entered by each club. At the end of each round 11 images are eliminated. until the final round when the winning image is selected.

SLIC lost no images after round 1, 1 after round 2, 2 after round 3, 2 after round 4, 1 after round 5, 2 after round 6 and 3 after round 7. This gave us a total of 54 points and gained us second place behind Wigan 10 who were the winners.

The images reaching the 6th round were Stormclouds by EB Swarbrick and Male Stonechat by Michael Spillane those reaching round 7 were Sarah by Norman Piper, Memories by Sheila Goodyear and Alter Ego by Bill Nairn.

The eight clubs taking part were, SLIC, Wigan 10, Southport, South Liverpool, North Cheshire, St Helen's, Lytham St. Anne's and South Manchester.

The results for the Dingwall National Slide Exhibition were announced at the beginning of October. Maureen Glynn had an entry and gained an acceptance with Solitude.

The results for the Bromsgrove Open Exhibition (BPE) were also announced in October. Maureen Glynn had an entry in both the slides and the digital projection categories. She had 3 acceptances for digitally projected images: Shaman, Prisoner of Time and Urban Tango, and 2 slides, The Past Re-visited and Street Entertainers.

The judge for the Third Quarterly Competition was Geoff Robinson. There were 50 prints and 31 digitally projected images for Geoff to judge. In the prints Maureen Glynn's Urban Tango gained a 20 plus the judge's bonus points for best in the competition.

Early November sees the Bramhall Annual Exhibition and open competitions. On Opening night, after the presentation of the awards, the Creative Print Competition (for individual entries) takes place. This year's team of 3 judges was headed by Gordon Jenkins, vice president of the L&CPU. SLIC members Norman Piper, Verna Piper, Richard Lodge, EB Swarbrick and Maureen Glynn all had images that went through to the final rounds. The eventual winner was maureen Glynn, with Prisoner of Time.

On the following night there are two inter-club competitions; The Print Panel, and the slide competition for the Laughton cup. The judge for both of the compeitions was Graham Johnston. In the Panel competition SLIC came second with In Print and Bramhall PS came first with Autumn Gorge.

Nine clubs took part in the slide competition, SLIC, North Cheshire, Bramhall, Bury, South Manchester,

SLIC came third, with 104 points, after Bury. South Manchester was the winner with 110 points.

SLIC's six slides were; Arctic Tern by Michael Spillane, Hat's Off! by Sheila Goodyear, Alhambra Courtyard by Norman Piper, Faith by Verna Piper and Solitude and The Entertainers by Maureen Glynn. The two highest scoring slides were, Alhambra Courtyard by Norman and Solitude by Maureen, both of which gained 19 points.

Barry Willcock had an entry in the first salon of the French Digital Tour and gained an acceptance with, Castlerigg Dawn.

The Martin Avery Competition was held again, this year, at South Liverpool PS. (It was cancelled in 2005). SLIC had an entry which gained 198 points and came second to Southport PS who had 203 points. Maureen Glynn won the trophy for the best individual print in the competition, with Urban Tango. The judge was Dave Butler from Wigan 10. Five clubs take part in the annual competition: Southport PS, SLIC, North Cheshire PS, St Helen's CC, and South Liverpool PS. SLIC's entry was comprised of, Alhambra Courtyard by Norman Piper, The Art Critic by Verna Piper, Hubub by EB Swarbrick, Three Tulips by Barry Willcock, Urban Tango, Shaman and The Prisoner of Time by Maureen Glynn, Leroy by EB Swarbrick, Clematis by Felicity Appleton, Agapanthus by Helen Spillane, Up the Escalator by Richard Lodge and Boer by Sheila Goodyear. Highest scoring images were by Maureen (20), Richard (18), Verna (18) and Felicity (18).
