What's been happening at SLIC month by month in 2008

2008 SLIC NEWS

December
2007

I was a little late getting the news page updated over Christmas so I thought I'd tack it on to the beginning of our news for 2008! The annual Christmas Party was held, as last year, at the Elton Liberal Club where we hold our monthly meetings. There was a great atmosphere and, as usual, Maureen had prepared the excellent and tasty buffet (no soggy sandwiches for us!).

Peter Madeley

What an excellent start to the New Year! Slic had a visit from natural history photographer Peter Madeley, from Blackburn. His relaxed presentation was both informative and interesting. There was opportunity for discussion; we watched short AV sequences; there were single projected images; there were even information and tutorial sheets! During his talk, based on a mixture of short AVs that became the basis for discussion, he involved the audience repeatedly and encouraged us to think about our own photography and what we wanted from it. All in all it was a great afternoon and the 3 hours passed extemely quickly.
If you want to know more about Peter you can visit his website at: http://www.madeley.garlick.net

Geoff Robinson
The 4th Quarterly, yet again! Where has the year disappeared to? It was another bumper entry, especially in the projected images section and our judge, Geoff Robinson, is an 'old' friend. He tackled the seemingly never-ending stream of prints and projected images and was still sounding enthusiastic when he reached the end! Geoff's comments were always worth listening to and he offered useful and constructive advice at all times.

This month saw a welcome return visit by Gwen and Phil Charnock with a talk about their own approach to photography and digital imaging. I am sure that most people reading this will need no introduction to Gwen and Phil and most will know, without being told, that it was a great afternoon with a series of pictures and AVs that made the audience want to grab their cameras and dash out to take some photographs! All this was accompanied by their own humorous narrative of anecdotes and stories that made the afternoon flash past in what seemed like minutes.

Sandy Furniss was our speaker this month, all the way from Northallerton in the North East. He illustrated his talk with a collection of his slides, all of which proved just why he was recently awarded EFIAP Gold. His talk ranged through his own approach to photography through his creative images made in camera to his more recent work using digital capture and manipulation. It was an afternoon of entertainment and instruction and all thoroughly enjoyable.

Chris Widdall
May sees the first meeting of SLIC's year and combines the AGM and the First Quarterly Competition, which follows it. Chris Widdall, from Oldham and also vice president of the L&CPU, was the judge for the afternoon. Chris is always a welcome visitor to SLIC, both as a former member and also as a visiting speaker or judge.
Because time was shorter than usual, Chris had her work cut out to get through the 68 projected images and 27 prints that had been entered. She did it with flying colours, not repeating herself once, and finding constructive and helpful comments to make about every image in front of her.

Graham Dean
The first guest speaker in SLIC's 'new year' was Graham Dean ('Deano') from Darwen. Graham has visited SLIC in the past, as a judge, but this is the first time that he has given the club a talk. He brought along a digital presentation showing a varied selection of his 'before and after' images, which was extremely interesting but made more so because most of them were also accompanied by a print which was displayed at the same time. His enthusiastic, infectious and individual approach to his image-making, plus his serious, and not-so-serious, conversations with the audience, made the afternoon really enjoyable.

This month's guest speaker at SLIC was Barry Park from Huddersfield. It was Barry's first visit to SLIC and, hopefully, he enjoyed his visit as much as we, at SLIC, enjoyed it.
Barry's subject for his talk was 'Themes' and he brought with him a variety of prints to illustrate it. They ranged from Natural History with images of wild animals in the various African National Parks; landscapes in colour, mono and infra-red; and portraits, together with everything in between. Along with the pictures Barry carried on a running commentary of information on location and relevant details and of how the image was produced, along with little anecdotes about the day on which it was taken. Altogether, it was an interesting and very enjoyable meeting.

It was hoped that this month's meeting would be a 'battle' between 2 clubs from Lancashire against 2 clubs from Yorkshire - A Battle of the Roses! However, it was not to be and it was decided that we'd have a competition for 'boys' versus 'girls'.
Our judge for the afternoon was Mike Lawrence, AFIAP, DPAGB from Oldham. Mike is a one-time member of SLIC and is always a welcome visitor. He had 60 projected images to look at, appraise and give a mark; 30 from members of the fairer sex and 30 from the men.
After a preview of the 60 images he won us all round by saying what a good set of pictures they were! He then went on to offer considered and helpful comment, criticism and suggestions for improvement on each of the images as they were presented. At the end of the competition the 'girls' were victorious and, because we'd won, it was a good humoured end to an enjoyable afternoon!
