What's been happening at SLIC month by month in 2007

2007 SLIC NEWS

December
2006

I was a little late getting the news page updated over Christmas so I thought I'd tack it on to the beginning of our news for 2007! The annual Christmas Party was held at our new venue - Elton Liberal club, this year. We had our usual splendid buffet prepared by Maureen Glynn and a quiz and brain teasers brought by Helen Spillane and Jim Perkins. It was a fun afternoon as everyone relaxed and chatted over food and drinks ....... an enjoyable end to a good and interesting year for the club. Click HERE and visit the party page for photographs!

January to April
2007

First of all - my apologies to anyone who might have visited these pages in the last few months and wondered why there had been no updates. Using the time honoured, but rather 'careworn' phrase, 'owing to circumstances beyond my control', sums up the fact that I've been unable to keep the site up to date. Hopefully, problems are being resolved and things will return to normal. fingers crossed!

To catch up briefly on the programme so far: ................ January's meeting saw a welcome return visit from Barry Colquhoun FRPS, FBIPP who didn't disappoint us with another really interesting talk and demonstration of Photoshop skills.

In February it was the Quarterly competition for prints and digitally projected images. Our judge was Tony Redford from North Cheshire PS. There were around 60 prints and 40 projected images and Tony found a positive and constructive comment for each one. The top pictures are on the 'Results Page'.

The March meeting saw yet another return visit - this time from Tony & Marjorie Furmston (both FRPS), from the YPF. They brought their new talk entitled Totally Digital Mark ll. We'd thoroughly enjoyed the Mark l version so were looking forward to the new one - and we weren't disappointed. We enjoyed an afternoon looking at some terrific images and enjoying the tales that accompanied them.

In April, Just when we thought it would be difficult to match the last speakers we had a visit from Margaret Salisbury, from North Wales, with her talk Digital Dragon. SLIC members were treated to some wonderful images from the Three 'I's of the 'dragon', Italy, Ireland and India. The icing on the cake came from the stories and anecdotes that made them all come alive.

May to August
2007

Things didn't go entirely to plan so the fingers are still crossed!

The biggest piece of news for club members was that we were successful in our application for a grant from Awards For All and we were able to purchase a new computer and digital projector etc., enabling the club to offer more to both its own members and the community as a whole.

The May meeting saw the AGM which produced no major changes. Afterwards we had the First Quarterly Competition, for Prints and Projected Images, which was judged by Mike Lawrence from Oldham. There were a few 'technical hitches' but Mike didn't let these bother him and he came up with lots of sound advice and good judgement. The top pictures are on the 'Results Page'. Normally the comptition has 2 categories, Open Prints and Open Digitally Projected but at the last meeting a new category was introduced, that of 'Experimental images'. This will attact, hopefully, those images that are 'for fun', experimental, 'way out', etc.; in other words anything that wouldn't normally go in front of a judge! The ones entered this month certainly lived up to expectations!

In June the club was visited by Chris Widdall from Oldham. She brought her talk entitled In My View. I wasn't able to be at the meeting but I've been told that I missed a really good talk in which Chris showed many of her own pictures and started some lively debates. We'll be welcoming her back in September when she visits SLIC to look at members' AV sequences.

In July (again, unfortunately, I wasn't able to be there) SLIC had speakers from t'other side o' t' Pennines, from Leeds in the the White Rose County. Alan & Lee Davies brought an interesting talk about their approach to Natural History photography called Natural History Through The Lens. Their photographs were all captured digitally and projected onto a screen. Again, I'm told that I missed a great afternoon.

The August meeting was SLIC's Second Quarterly Competition. Our judge was Ian Whiston from Northwich who found something positive to say about all the images and offered constructive criticism when necessary. The top pictures are on the 'Results Page'.
