The first meeting of 2006 saw a visit from
Bob Rowe of Nottingham with a talk on Photoshop. No matter how familiar
we are, with the software, there's always some new way of approaching it
to be found and Bob had plenty to show us.
He rounded off the afternoon by introducing us to the new ideas being formulated
about making and sharing AV sequences.
All in all a most interesting afternoon. |

This was the first Quarterly in 2006 and Graham Dean from Darwen was our
judge. It was to have been Gordon Jenkins from Chorley but, when Gordon
found that he was unable to be with us, Graham agreed to step in as our
judge.
There were around 60 prints for Graham to look at and must have been pretty
pleased with what he saw as he awarded a record number of '20's and extra
bonus points before he decided that the picture he thought the best was
Ullswater Boathouse, by Richard Lodge. Every single one, of Richard's
pictures, found favour with Graham and each got a 20 plus bonus points! |

A talk by Keith Suddaby is always one which we know we're going to find
interesting, instructive and enjoyable. Today was no exception. Keith
was talking to us about digital audio visuals and how he envisages the
future of this aspect of our hobby.
He brought with him a selection of his own digital sequences made over
the last few years.

It's
quite a while since SLIC had a visit from Tony and Dorothy
Redford so we were all looking forward to it and anticipating
a really great afternoon. And we weren't disappointed! We were
treated to a staggering number of images which Tony projected
onto a screen whilst Dorothy put the appropriate prints up onto
the print stand. Not only did we see the images but, with many
of the constructed pictures, Tony also showed us the originals
and what he'd done with them to arrive at the final image.
It was all truly fascinating.

The
May meeting is always a busy one ........... the AGM
followed by the first Quarterly competition.
The AGM was dealt with first and, with no contentious
issues to discuss, was quickly dispatched and we could
get down to the more enjoyable part of the afternoon.
Gordon Jenkins from Chorley was our guest judge for
the First Quarterly Competition. Gordon has visited
SLIC before and his visits are always popular.
He had a total of 42 prints and 28 digitally projected
images to mark.
Digitally projected images were included in a Quarterly
competition two years ago in 2004 but, as there were
problems 'blacking out' the room adequately, they were
discontinued. Hopefully, these problems have now been
overcome and we can continue to include dp images in
the competitions.

Milly
on her visit to SLIC in April 2004
|
|
|
The
June meeting saw the welcome return of artist Milly Chadband.
Disappointingly, I was unable to be at the meeting so 'roving
reporter' Maureen wrote the following few words of appreciation
for us: Milly was in fine form. She last visited us at SLIC
in April 2004 and has produced an amazing amount of new work.
There were watercolours, acrylics, oils, chalks.............you
name it, she'd done it! Perhaps what provoked most interest
were her collages, particularly those made from newspapers.
All in all a thoroughly entertaining afternoon.

Once
again, unfortunately, I was unable to be at this month's meeting
and 'roving reporter' Maureen has again filled the gap for me:-
"Our meeting this month was held to the accompaniment of
a violent thunderstorm but our speaker, Tillman Kleinhans, was
undeterred and showed us a selection of his, as usual, high
quality prints. Just as we stopped for a break there was a power
cut - courtesy of the vicious weather - and, at first, it seemed
that the meeting would have to be curtailed. Fortunately, power
was restored and Tillman was able to continue with his talk.
During the second half of the meeting we watched 3 of his digital
audio visual sequences. The first was one of his earlier avs,
originally made with 35mm slides; the second was about the French
town of Oradour, and the final one was about power boats."
Our thanks to Tillman, for a really interesting afternoon.

Our
judge for this month's Quarterly competition was Martin Malies, from
South Manchester CC. It was his first visit to SLIC and it was also
SLIC's first meeting in its new venue (See HERE
for details).
Martin had a total of 90 prints and digitally projected images to
judge and found something constructive and helpful to say about each
one.
His bonus points for the best print went to Barry Willcock for Three
Tulips and for the best dp image to Norman Piper for Gina. |

Cathy
McKinty, from Corby, made a return visit to SLIC to be our
guest speaker for this month's meeting. Cathy is an enthusiastic
photographer and artist who now enjoys success in selling her images
on a stock library and on commission. We saw some of Cathy's work
when she visited SLIC last year so we knew that we could look
forward to an interesting meeting; and we weren't disappointed. She
brought with her a number of projected sequences showing how some
of her more complex images were created and, also, showed a number
of av sequences of her most successful images and commissions.
Our thanks to Cathy for sharing her pictures with us but also for
bringing some fun and laughter into the afternoon as she talked about
her work. |

October
2006
|
|
The
October meeting is the one to which we now, annually, bring any
of the AV sequences that have been made over the past year so that
we can share them with the other members of SLIC. It is not
a competition, and work-in-progress is always welcome. The day has
now become a feature of the SLIC programme and a fair number
of sequences were brought along. To appraise the sequences, and
offer helpful advice, we'd invited John Smith, from Rochdale to
join us. John is an experienced AV worker and a member of Wilmslow
Guild AV group, so he was well qualified to appraise the sequences.
Our thanks to John for agreeing to visit SLIC. His advice
and comments were, as always, helpful and constructive; never harsh
or unkind and always encouraging. I'm sure that we all came away
from the meeting determined to take note of his suggestions and
put them into practice when making our next sequences.

Once
again the year has come round to the 3rd Quarterly Competition ........
our judge for November was Geoff Robinson. Geoff is always a welcome
guest at SLIC and he has visited the club, in the past, both
as a lecturer and as a judge. Geoff had 50 prints and 31 digitally
projected images to judge. He is an articulate judge who, when speaking
about the print in front of him, will point out the good points
and also, when necessary, where he thinks improvements can be made.
His comments are invariably reasonable and always constructive.
Many
thanks for coming to visit SLIC again, Geoff.
